Dunbar High School

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 31, 2007) –The Museum of Discovery will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School through an exhibit that honors and recognizes Dunbar High School. Through historical documents, personal stories and memorabilia from the students and school, the exhibit will tell the story of Dunbar High School and their important role of educating Arkansas’s African Americans in the years before school integration. The exhibit will be located at the Museum of Discovery and open to the public in September 2007.

In the years prior to the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board rulings, Dunbar High School was one of only six Arkansas high schools for African Americans and was the only black high school accredited by the North Central Association. Each of the Little Rock Nine attended Dunbar before enrolling in Central High School. The school not only served Little Rock residents, but also attracted many from the Delta region. They often worked in service occupations and lived with Little Rock relatives in order to receive the quality education offered at Dunbar. Dunbar included a high school as well as a two-year junior college. Dunbar High School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
